PREDESTINED

by Kevin V. Rutherford

There are many things that God predestined.  God predetermined that when the time was right He would send His son to redeem sinners (Galatians 4:4, 5).  God predetermined that all of the faithful in Christ would be saved (Ephesians 1:3-11).  But God did not create individuals in such a way that their eternal destiny was chosen for them.

The fact that mankind can make decisions which will affect his eternal destiny is made clear throughout the Scriptures.  From the very beginning we see that man had a choice (Genesis 2:16, 17).  Joshua made this fact very clear to the Jews when he said, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15).”

While God can use the choices of men to accomplish His will, we are not to conclude that God made those choices for them.  Furthermore, God’s knowledge of the mind’s of men, and of the ways in which they would react to a specific set of circumstances does not mean he forced them to react in that manner.

You are given the choice as to where you shall spend eternity.  The book of Acts makes this obvious.  The Gospel was preached to as many souls as possible.  Some souls chose to obey the Gospel while others chose not to. Which are you more like?  God has predestined the faithful in Christ to spend eternity in heaven.  Why not choose to be among them by obeying God (Matthew 7:21; Hebrews 5:8, 9)?
