WHY ARE THERE SO MANY RELIGIONS

by Dan Goddard

Wouldn’t it be easier if there was only one religion?  Anyone who wanted to obey God could easily see what he should do to be pleasing to God and go to heaven.  The problem is that men turn their philosophies and doctrines into religion.  Therefore, religions are multiplying and will continue to multiply until the coming of Jesus Christ (cf. 2 Timothy 3:13).

The Thessalonians were troubled (2 Thessalonians 2:1-2) by people who were teaching that the resurrection (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10) had already passed (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3).  Paul explained that the resurrection would not come until after the falling away (2 Thessalonians 2:3) which was already at work in the First Century (2 Thessalonians 2:7).

The falling away is the departure into false religions.  Paul warned Timothy saying:

Paul told the Thessalonians the reason that God allowed Satan to bring false religions into the world saying: “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12).

Why are there so many religions today?  Because God has sent a strong delusion into the World so that those who do not love and obey the truth, believe the lie.  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).  But the obedient souls will rejoice “When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day” (2 Thessalonians 1:10).

For you and me, we must be certain that we love and believe the truth.  If we love the truth, we will be committed to live-out the truth in our lives at any cost.  If we do not love the truth, we will believe the lie.

There are two types of people in the world—those who love and believe the truth and those who believe the lie.  Which type person are you?
